PSA Nitrogen Generation

Generating high-purity nitrogen on site from compressed air using carbon molecular sieve in a pressure-swing adsorption cycle — for blanketing, purging, and inerting.

Quick Answer

PSA nitrogen generation separates nitrogen from compressed air using carbon molecular sieve, which preferentially adsorbs oxygen under pressure. Twin adsorbers cycle continuously to deliver on-site nitrogen at 95 %–99.999 % purity, removing dependence on delivered liquid or cylinder gas.

Sites needing continuous nitrogen for blanketing, purging, or inerting face high recurring costs and logistics risk from delivered gas. On-site generation converts a variable opex into a predictable, self-sufficient supply.

How PSA Nitrogen Works

Compressed air passes through carbon molecular sieve under pressure; oxygen and moisture are adsorbed faster than nitrogen, so nitrogen passes through. The bed is regenerated by depressurisation while a second bed produces — giving continuous flow.

Where It Is Used

Tank blanketing, pipeline and vessel purging, food and beverage packaging, laser cutting, and heat-treatment atmospheres.

FAQ

Is on-site generation cheaper than delivered N₂?

For continuous or high-volume demand, generated nitrogen is typically a fraction of the cost of delivered liquid or cylinders, with payback often under two years.

Selection Guidance

Define required purity and peak flow. Lower purity gives higher recovery and a smaller CMS charge; ultra-high purity needs more CMS or a deoxo polishing step. Clean, dry, oil-free feed air is essential to CMS life.
