Molecular Sieve 13X

Sodium-form X-type zeolite with a 10 Å pore — used for CO₂ and moisture removal in air pre-purification and for sweetening and deep drying of liquids and gases.

Molecular Sieve 13X
Quick Answer

Molecular Sieve 13X is a sodium-form X-type zeolite with a 10 Ångström pore. It simultaneously removes water and carbon dioxide and adsorbs larger molecules such as mercaptans, making it the standard adsorbent for cryogenic air-separation pre-purification and combined drying-and-sweetening duties.

Product Overview

Molecular Sieve 13X has the largest pore of the common A/X zeolites at ~10 Å, giving it high capacity for water and carbon dioxide together with the ability to adsorb larger molecules such as mercaptans and aromatics. This makes it the workhorse adsorbent for air pre-purification ahead of cryogenic separation.

Key Performance Characteristics

High simultaneous CO₂/H₂O capacity, strong mass-transfer kinetics, and mechanical durability under pressure-swing and temperature-swing cycling. Supplied with controlled particle-size distribution for low pressure drop in deep beds.

FAQ

Why is 13X used for air pre-purification?

It removes both moisture and CO₂ in a single bed, preventing freeze-out in the cold box of a cryogenic air-separation unit, and also captures trace hydrocarbons that pose a safety risk downstream.

Can 13X be regenerated?

Yes — by temperature-swing (200–350 °C dry purge) or pressure-swing depending on the process. The structure tolerates many cycles when liquid carryover is prevented.
